I Just Want To Hit Things

I Just Want To Hit Things

About 2 years ago I bit the bullet and bought an electronic kit. Not being able to play my acoustic kit on a regular basis sucked a bit (to say the very least), and with all the miserable complainers I constantly seem to reside next to, I figured an electronic kit was an apt purchase.

My Roland TD12K has served me well. I’ve used it pretty much every day since, hooking it up to a set of headphones and an iPod, never receiving any complaints regarding noise.

The kit is stored in my mum’s garage, so I’m often playing while she’s upstairs watching TV, or even in the office getting work done (which is on the same floor as the garage). I don’t know if it’s because she was so used to me playing on an acoustic set for a long time, but the electronic kit has been a god send for my mum. She says she can hear tapping, regardless of where she is in the house, but that it’s pretty faint and doesn’t bother her at all.

Today, just as I was leaving my mum’s house after a paltry 10 minutes on the kit, the next door neighbour asked if I had been drumming. I knew what was coming after that. She told me it was giving her a headache, to which I responded with “Well, that’s why I bought the electronic kit. So the only burden for neighbours is faint tapping”. She then asked if I could keep it down. It’s not even evening yet – something of that noise level shouldn’t be a problem.

To be honest, I didn’t disguise the fact I was pissed off. Drumming is something I get a huge amount of pleasure from, and I think it’s important to include hobbies in our daily lives seeing as so much time is spent working and stressing over other factors. I feel I’ve done my bit; compromising with sound levels by not only drumming on an electronic kit, but feeding it through headphones, not an amp.

I don’t play at ridiculous levels, nor do I play at unforgiving times. Truth is, I’m now forever going to be aware of this neighbour every time I sit at my kit, knowing I’m giving her a fucking headache from this amount of noise. It’s pissed me off, incase you can’t already tell.

Tonight I head to the local Yacht Club to hear a band play who are interested in having me drum for them. If all goes well, I’ll be practicing a lot more often. But now that’s tainted, because I know with every encounter of my 5A Vic Firths to my mesh heads, someone is sitting next door going “AAH! The noise!”. What do I do?

It may be harsh but you should simply not give a fuck about that neighbour.
You’re not doing it at night, you’re keeping it quiet – come on it’s electronic, and as you’ve mentioned – the sound goes on the headphones.

I must say you are a veeeeery calm person. If someone told me I should stop doing what I love because they can’t stand the noise in the MIDDLE of a fucking day I’d show the middle finger, tell him/her what I do think of this idea and slammed the door (hopefully hitting that person straight in the face).

As a last resort – you can try moving the drum kit into other room, maybe this will help somehow.

It always pisses me off reading/hearing about some stupid-ass neighbours who get so fucking bored that they have to mess around someone else’s lifes.

    So… Ash…
You love to hit that drums?
    YOU LOVE TO SMASH ‘EM?
    THEN DO IT!

(I’m not sure how things are there in Scotland, but here in Poland, if it’s not 10p.m. you can do exactly what I wrote ;) )

    Cheers!

As a teenager my parents and I did live two doors away (Detached Houses) from a group of older teenagers that had a Acoustic Drum Kit which could hear quite clearly. However, we never complained about it. My parents would close the windows if they wanted silence. Besides, this group of teenagers would play only in afternoon during the summer holidays. So it was quite predicable to everyone else when they would play which a lot easier for the neighbours to tolerate.

However, the noise from that Electronic Drum Kit video is nothing. I’m surprised that the next door neighbour could acutal hear such a noise. Do you live in a Semi-Detached or Terraced housing? Since the only reason I think that she could such noise would be through a shared wall or somthing. I wonder how she reacts to the noise of a Washing Machine or Vaccum Cleaner whihch are 100x louder!

    Two solutions:

Do your drumming with the Washing Machine on at same time!

    OR (more sensible solution)

Buy some wall sound proofing foam for your wells to sound proof the room that you play the drums: http://www.soundservice.co.uk/acoustic_plasterboard.html

LOL. Don’t let it get to you. Your neighbour sounds like a prude who gets enjoyment out of complaining. Roland mesh heads are quiet as can be. Hell, I hook mine up to an active PA speaker – now THAT’S loud. Don’t waste your time trying to make things quieter, since that was the entire point of the electronic kit, right?

Let your neighbour complain. You ain’t doing anything wrong.

Don’t let your neighbour spoil your enjoyment!
I’ve watched the video where you are playing and you can barely hear anything. And I bet you can’t even hear it through the walls…

Damn… just ignore the comment of the neighbour and enjoy playing the drums!

Great advice from everyone, especially like the washing machine tip ;) I won’t let it prevent me from playing drums. In fact, I was behind the kit again today. She can move to Mars if she wants peace and quiet.

I'm interested to know what you think. Leave a comment
